Providing Life-Saving Water In Adamawa

One of the basic necessities of life is water, or like the popular saying goes, water is life. In this report, our correspondent, Austin Ajayi writes on the pipe borne water production and distribution in the urban centers in Adamawa State.

The provision of clean and portable water is the responsibility of government to it’s citizens.

Over the years this basic necessities of life has been neglected by successive government in Adamawa state, leaving residents to look for alternative means of providing water for use.

It is on record that in Adamawa State, like every other state in Nigeria, more than 95%ol of residents have personally drill bore hole in their compand.

How is the government of Ahamdu Umaru Fintiri tackling this problem in the state.

General manager, Adamawa State Water Board, Engr. Hamidu Usman in an interview said the government of Finitiri has given the Board order and has made provision for changing of our pipes that convenes treated water to consumers in the state capital and it’s environs.

The present pipe that we have was put in place in 1976, we have started replacing them particularly in the Ubran ares in the state, the governor has also through the ministry of water resources ordered for Alum for the purification of water at the water work stations in Yola, Mubi and Other local government areas.

“We have started distributing water in some areas in the state capital and as we progress in the changing of the obsulate pipes so also the water distribution will increase. The GM said.

How is the mechanary ?

The heavy duty pumping mechanies that were broken down until the Red Cross came to the aid of the state and not only donated six big motorized pumping mechanies but also renoviated and reforblished the electrical panel and the physical structures at the main water work in Borunje just behind the government house Yola.

According to the General manager ” we were producing 4 million liters but now we produce 16 million liters of pure and portable water per day”

” We are still not on target, we hope met the water need of the people.

For now we are facing a big challenge because of the obsulate pipe and we hope this government we give us more support to make water available in all household in the state”..

It could be recalled, UNICEF in conjunction with UKaid donated 500 drums of and 500 bags of lime for the purification of water in the urban cities to prevent outbrake coleria and other water related dieases.

Despite all these efforts our investigation shows that the supplies in the Ubran ares is still far from being over as in every ten visited, residents just one can boast of public water supply.

While some.says they have any business with public supplies others say they preferred to relie on private bore hores.

Mr. Abel David says ” the water from the public supplies is always not clean and as I don’t think I will ever drink their wate I.

This claim was however, debunked, the said the Adamawa water Board has one of the best lab, the water goes through thoro process of water purification and I can boast anywhere that our products can compit with the best around the world”.

The governor has said one of his 11 point agenda is to provide portable drinking water for all, he is doing his best in this regard but he needs to do more the GM said.

Mubi water project is on and will soon be completed and put to use.
