Nigeria Capable Of Producing Many Likes Of Anthony Joshua, Dr Ogbu

Chief Dr Osondu Ogbu, chairman, Southeast zone of the Nigerian Boxing Federation, says Nigeria can rule the world in boxing in the near future if the right people are put in place.

Chief Ogbu spoke on Monday in Enugu in an interview with newsmen.

He said, “We want to groom more Anthony Joshua breeds for this country. In fact, we already have Efe Ajagba, who started with us. He is currently doing well in the US. He has never lost any contest.”

On how he has encourages boxing in the Southeast, Dr Ogbu said, “I recently sponsored a course for boxing referees and judges in Enugu to make them abreast of current trends in boxing. I will also encourage one IK Okoronkwo, who has been doing great things towards discovering boxing talents in Enugu. We are also planning to commence a boxing series.

“I believe we shall go places. With the kind of support we get from Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, and his commissioner, Mr Manfred Nzekwe, there will be positives in the boxing arena soon. We intend to reach out to other Southeast governors in due course.”

Dr Ogbu said he is vying for the national vice president of the NBF to contribute his quota towards nurturing boxers at the national level.

According to him, “Boxing is gaining grounds nationally. As we develop nationally, my target is to nurture young boxers across all nooks and crannies of this country.”

He described the immediate past president of the NBF, Lt Gen Kenneth Minima (retrd), as an epitome of leadership par excellence, adding that, “With him there, developing boxing in Nigeria will be accelerated.”
