2023 presidency: CBN Gov, Emefiele, returns forms, meets Buhari

By Ezeocha Nzeh

Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwing Emefiele, yesterday, submitted his completed presidential nomination forms to the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the party’s International Conference Center (ICC) collection and submission venue, even as he has remained at his position, despite a federal Appeal Court ruling that upheld the provision of Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act 2022, which demands that all appointees of government must resign from their positions before seeking any elective office

Emefiele submission has effectively put him in the ring as he will among other aspirants face the A{PC screening committee before heading for the June 1 and 2 party’s presidential primary

Emefiele who has been rated as one of the favourites to clinch the ticket said he was sure the delegates of the party will vote for the continuation, consolidation and expansion of the legacies of President Muhammadu Buhari, adding that that is what his candidature offers the Party and Nigerians.

The CBN boss however held a closed door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa on Thursday

This it was gathered was no doubt in connection with the presidential directive for appointees with political ambitions in 2023 to resign latest by Monday,

The CBN Governor had earlier sought a Court protection to stop the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from disqualifying him from the APC primary and election proper ir he fails to resign his appointment as directed by the Electoral Act 2022

When asked by State House Correspondent to react to the story that the President had directed him to resign forthwith, the CBN Governor replied: “There is no news now, but there will be news. You heard me, I said there is no news, but there will be news”.

When reminded that given his current position, his ambition was creating anxiety among Nigerians as well as the international community, Emefiele noted that he was having fun at the scenario.

According to him: “Let them have heart attack. It’s good to have heart attack. I am having a lot of fun.”

A group of farmers had procured the N100 million presidential nomination forms of the ruling party, All Progressive Congress (APC) for Emefiele, a move he earlier denied as having their backing.
