FCT Minister advocates effective maintenance of public facilities

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Malam Muhammad Bello has urged effective maintenance and sustainable management of public facilities in the territory.

He stated this during the flag – off ceremony of the rehabilitation of the Federal Secretariat complex, phase 1 on Tuesday in Abuja.

Bello explained that the secretariat was commissioned over 30 years ago, and needs to be reinvigorated to continue to serve the purpose it was built.

The Minister advocated for a system where by some persons will be recruited to be in – charge of maintaining public buildings (facilities) than the constant use of contractors.

According to him, the procurement regarding maintenance has not been successful and calls for recruitment of staff on junior cadre to grow through the ranks to be managing the facilities.

He said the state of decay in the public facilities was worrisome and urgent steps should be taken to tackle the menace.

“Facilities management is an ideal and practicable if there are measures and policies put in place to ensure that. If not, it will not bring the desired results”

In her remarks, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Folasade Yemi – Esan, said the secretariat needs to be renovated to spur staff to good work.

She explained that funding has been the challenge but with  full support of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), the project will be completed.
