Acting Chief of Army Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, has pledged to bring lasting peace to Nigeria if confirmed as the substantive Chief of Army Staff. He made this commitment when he appeared before the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Defence and Army at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
Oluyede emphasized the need for a united effort from all Nigerians to address the country’s security challenges. He also called for strong bilateral and multilateral alliances with neighboring countries, as well as deep collaboration and joint efforts by the services and other security agencies.
The Acting Chief of Army Staff expressed his honor at being considered for the position and promised to contribute his best efforts to bring lasting peace to Nigeria. He acknowledged the tragic loss of the 23rd Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, and expressed his commitment to continuing the excellent work of the Army.
Oluyede highlighted his over 30 years of service to the Nigerian Army, during which he has gained exposure to national security issues at various levels. He acknowledged that he cannot distance himself from the successes and setbacks of the Army in recent years but sees his nomination as an opportunity to bring about positive changes.
Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Hon Babajimi Benson, noted that Nigeria continues to face evolving security challenges, including insurgency, banditry, communal clashes, and cyber threats. He emphasized the need for innovative and adaptive strategies to address these threats.
Benson stressed that the position of Chief of Army Staff carries immense responsibility and requires leadership with integrity, professionalism, and a deep commitment to protecting lives and property. He urged Oluyede to provide comprehensive and candid responses to the committee’s questions.
The screening exercise is expected to continue, with the outcome to be reviewed and presented to the House during plenary on Thursday. Oluyede’s confirmation as the substantive Chief of Army Staff is crucial in Nigeria’s journey towards lasting peace and stability.
Oluyede also emphasized the need for tactical aircraft to support the Army’s operations. He noted that the Air Force is responsible for strategic cover, while the Army requires tactical air support during combat operations.
