Eid-el-Kabir, Democracy Day: Labour Party reschedules all primaries, May 30

By Myke Uzendu, Abuja

The Labour Party (LP) has announced the rescheduling of all its primary elections for the 2027 general elections to May 30, 2026, citing the need to accommodate the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations and activities marking the third anniversary of elected public office holders across Nigeria.

The party disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa.

According to the statement, the primaries initially scheduled for May 27, 2026, for governorship and state Houses of Assembly positions, and May 29, 2026, for presidential and National Assembly aspirants, will now be conducted simultaneously on Saturday, May 30, 2026.

“The Labour Party hereby notifies the general public, party members, and all aspirants participating in the Party’s 2027 primary elections that the primaries earlier scheduled for 27th May 2026 (Governorship and State Houses of Assembly) and 29th May 2026 (Presidential and National Assembly) have been rescheduled,” the statement said.

The party explained that the adjustment became necessary because the earlier dates coincided with significant national and religious events.

“The 27th May date coincides with the 2026 Eid el-Kabir (Eid al-Adha) celebration, while 29th May marks the third anniversary of the inauguration of elected public office holders across the country,” the statement added.

The Labour Party said the decision reflects its commitment to inclusivity and responsiveness to the concerns of members and supporters.

“In consideration of the spiritual significance of the Sallah celebration and the national importance of the 29th May anniversary, the Labour Party, as a people-oriented and responsive political party, deemed it appropriate to adjust its schedule in order to enable members, aspirants, supporters, and Nigerians generally to fully observe these important occasions,” the party stated.

The development means all primaries for the offices of President, Governor, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Houses of Assembly will now take place on the same day nationwide.

The party expressed regret over any inconvenience the change may cause aspirants and stakeholders, while appealing for understanding.

“The Party regrets any inconvenience this adjustment may occasion to aspirants, stakeholders, supporters, and members of the public, and appreciates their understanding and cooperation,” Asogwa said.

The rescheduling comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with aspirants across parties seeking nominations for various elective offices. The conduct of primaries remains a crucial stage in determining candidates who will fly party flags in the elections.
