The Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Network Against Child Trafficking, Abuse and Labour (NACTAL), Anambra State Chapter, over the weekend, commemorated the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons with a sensitisation road walk.
The exercise was aimed at raising public awareness on the dangers of human trafficking.
Speaking during the exercise, the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, said the road walk was organised to educate the public on the realities of human trafficking, advocate for stronger action and policy implementation, and encourage collective responsibility in protecting vulnerable persons.
Mrs. Onyekesi stressed that human trafficking remains a grave violation of human rights that thrives on silence and ignorance even as she urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
She asserted that increasing public awareness is a vital step towards preventing trafficking in persons as well as protecting women and children, and ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice.
Mrs Onyekesi expressed the readiness of her Ministry to collaborate with relevant stakeholders and agencies to combat trafficking in persons across the State.
