The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the Ministry of Federal Capital Territory , Nyesom Wike has raised concerns over alleged inflammatory remarks linked to the recent opposition summit held in Ibadan, Oyo State, warning against rhetoric capable of inciting political violence.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Jugundo Haruna referenced comments reportedly made by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, during the opposition gathering, where he was alleged to have used the term “Wetie”, a phrase historically associated with a period of intense political violence in Nigeria’s past.
The PDP described the reported remarks as “disgraceful” and firmly distanced itself from any form of violent expression in the political space.
“Violence has absolutely no place in our political space today,” the party said, stressing that Nigeria’s stability must take precedence over political competition and personal ambition.
The Ibadan summit, which brought together various opposition figures and political actors ahead of the 2027 general elections, has been widely seen as a strategic effort to build alliances and possibly present a united front against the ruling party. However, the PDP warned that such engagements must be conducted responsibly.
“Nigeria must come first, before politics and before personal ambitions. Without a peaceful and stable nation, no political system or democratic process can thrive,” the statement added.
The party called on Nigerians across party lines to reject divisive rhetoric and actions that could threaten national unity, noting that the country’s history serves as a reminder of the dangers of political violence.
“Our shared history reminds us of the cost of division, and we must remain vigilant in safeguarding the peace we have worked hard to build,” it said.
The PDP also urged security and law enforcement agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged remarks and ensure accountability where necessary.
“We urge security agencies to carry out their duties with diligence and professionalism by reviewing these reports and ensuring that all relevant individuals respond to lawful inquiries, no matter how highly placed,” the statement noted.
Reaffirming its position, the party said it remains committed to promoting a political culture anchored on dialogue, tolerance, and respect for the rule of law, even as opposition realignments intensify ahead of the next electoral cycle.
