The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has identified sustained peace, improved security and stronger collaboration between the federal and Abia State governments as key to accelerating development in the state.
Kalu who represents Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State, made the remarks in a statement on Thursday to mark the 35th anniversary of the creation of the state.
Abia was created on August 27, 1991, by the military administration of former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, out of the old Imo State.
The Deputy Speaker said the relative peace and security enjoyed by the state remained critical to attracting investments, creating employment opportunities and driving economic growth.
He commended successive administrations, both military and civilian, for their contributions to the development of the state, stressing that the progress recorded in Abia was the result of the collective efforts of past and present leaders.
Kalu particularly praised the administration of Governor Alex Otti for what he described as its emphasis on security and good governance.
He cited the establishment of an Air Force office in Umuahia, the state capital, as one of the measures aimed at strengthening security and creating a more conducive environment for development.
The Deputy Speaker also highlighted the growing cooperation between the state government and the federal government, noting that such collaboration had facilitated initiatives and projects expected to have significant economic and social impact.
According to him, the approval of the Certificate of Occupancy for federal projects, including the Industrial Court, Renewed Hope Housing Projects and newly approved federal educational institutions in the state, demonstrates the benefits of bipartisan cooperation.
He said the projects, alongside other developments expected in Abia, would help attract investments, create jobs and expand infrastructure across the state.
Kalu further commended efforts by the state government towards the payment of pensions and gratuities owed to retired workers, describing the welfare of pensioners as a responsibility that must be continuously upheld.
He urged Abians and the government to sustain the peace, unity and development momentum recorded in the state, saying continued cooperation between different levels of government would be essential to achieving greater progress.
“Abia at 35 is a story of resilience and progress. I commend the governments, present and previous administrations, for their efforts aimed at developing our dear state and I urge us to sustain the momentum of peace, unity and service delivery,” he said.
Kalu congratulated the government and people of Abia State on the 35th anniversary, wishing residents a successful celebration.
