The Department Of Monitoring And Inspection has expressed concern over the distortions in the Abuja Master Plan, and called on residents to cooperate with the Administration to ensure that development are carried out in line with the Master Plan.
During an inspection exercise, the Director, Town Planner Olawale Labiyi, who was represented by the Head, City Monitoring Division, Town Planner Obina Nkwocha said that the greatest concern in City Monitoring is enforcing the Concept and Aesthetic of the Abuja Master Plan.
Nkwocha said the upsurge in the population, and constant change in land uses, is negatively affecting the facilities and amenities provided by the FCT Administration.
According to Obina Nkwocha, “The facilities are being overstretched and residents seem not to be concerned. When you convert a block of 18 Flats to 36 Flats, what do you think happens to the infrastructure that has already been installed for 18 Flats?
He said it is high time that taking interest in Public facilities because it belongs to them.
Nkwocha added that he was also concerned about the health of residents as bleeding Manholes and drain I’d not properly managed cause breeding of Mosquitoes and other life threatening diseases.
He observed that indiscriminate dumping of Construction wastes/ material, and bleeding manhole are some of the reoccurring problems in City Monitoring. He said residents can contribute to effective City Monitoring by maintaining personal hygiene in their immediate environment.
According to him, other areas where residents can assist in improving the aesthetics of the City is to desist from dumping refuse in drainage Channels, Developers should confine their construction materials within their plot as stated in the Building Plan Approval; while the Planting of Trees, Flowers and Shrubs are highly recommended.
Obina said the Department of Monitoring And Inspection is committed to monitoring the City to ensure all nuisances are attended to, and urged residents to be partners in progress with Federal Capital Territory Administration.
