FG declares May 1 public holiday for 2026 workers’ day celebration

The Federal Government has declared Friday, 1st May 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day. The declaration was announced by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, in a press release signed by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on 29th April 2026.

In his message, Dr. Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerian workers nationwide on the annual celebration, commending their hard work and dedication to national development. He described workers’ contributions as essential to Nigeria’s growth and prosperity, noting that their commitment remains the backbone of the economy.

The Minister urged workers to uphold patriotism, productivity, and dedication in the discharge of their duties, stressing that such values are crucial for sustainable development. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the welfare and security of all workers and to creating a favorable environment for economic growth.

While wishing workers a happy celebration, Dr. Tunji-Ojo called on all Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding during the holiday. He encouraged citizens to use the occasion to reflect on the importance of unity and hard work in nation-building.

The announcement sets the stage for nationwide celebrations of International Workers’ Day, observed annually on May 1 to honor the contributions of labour to society.
