2027: Internal democracy will guide our primaries — Imo APC adopts

From Everest Ezihe, Owerri

As the All Progressives Congress (APC) finalises plans to commence its primaries today ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Imo State chapter of the party has resolved to fully implement internal democracy in the conduct of all its primaries.

The State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Onwuasoanya Jones, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Owerri and made available to journalists. The statement, titled “Party Members Shall Decide Our Flag Bearers,” emphasised the party’s commitment to ensuring that all members participate actively in the selection of candidates.

According to the statement, the decision aligns with the revised schedule for the 2026 primaries and covers the nomination of candidates for 27 State Constituencies, 10 House of Representatives seats, and three Senatorial districts in Imo State.

Onwuasoanya reiterated the party’s position that all card-carrying members are “automatic kingmakers,” stressing that every member would have the opportunity to vote during the primaries.

He urged aspirants who are yet to begin grassroots engagement to do so immediately by interfacing with party members, particularly at the ward level, to canvass support ahead of the exercise.

The APC spokesman also called on party leaders and officials at all levels not to hinder aspirants from reaching out to members, but instead create an enabling environment for healthy engagement.

He further encouraged party members to make themselves available when approached by aspirants, listen to their plans, ask questions, and make informed choices during the primaries.

Onwuasoanya assured members and aspirants of the party leadership’s commitment to fairness, equity, and transparency, while urging all stakeholders to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship and patriotism that define the APC’s philosophy.
