International Day of Rural Women: Plateau Deputy Governor hails contribution of women

The Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Mrs Josephine Piyo has commended rural women for their contributions in providing food, generating income, improving livelihoods as well as overall well-being of families in the State.

Piyo stated this through her Chief Press Secretary, Martha Nyam, in commemoration of the International Day of Rural Women, in Jos the State Capital.

The Deputy Governor, hailed women in rural communities for their immense contributions to sustainable development, particularly in the area of agriculture and rural enterprises in state.

She added that the day is commemorated on October 15 each year to celebrate and applaud the role of women in rural development, food production and poverty eradication.

“She applauded rural women for supporting their households and communities in providing food, generating income, improving rural livelihoods and overall wellbeing of families in the state.

While describing rural women in the state as “dogged and resilient”, Piyo said that it was critical that they are accorded their rightful place as active participants, in the efforts to achieve sustainable development in the State.

According to her, “The Governor Mutfwang-led administration is sensitive to gender equality and women’s empowerment which are essential components of human development and basic human rights.

“This administration is working assiduously to ensure that local communities are safe for farming and other businesses to thrive”, the Deputy Governor stressed.
